2011 Spring SLPF

Hello Everyone

We sailed Spring Series Day 6 on Saturday, May 7th. Wind was East at 5 to 7 knots.

Five boats sailed six races. Gina Morri was our race committee for the day. Thanks Gina.

Rain showed up at the end of the sixth race, it looked like everyone was ready to line up for number seven anyway.

We were all wet by the time we finished loading the boats on the trailers and the parking lot emptied out quick.

Jack takes the day before heading off to the Island Goat Sailing Society Dinner at CYC’s Belmont Station.

Sandy sailed with Diane Hunt as stand in crew they take second for the day.

It was great to see all of you at the pond.

Our Series closes in two weeks.

So if you thought you were going to sail the Penguin this spring, now is the time.

The First Annual Frank Flaherty Regatta is scheduled for this Saturday May 14th.

Start time is at 12:30.

Sunday the 15th we sail Spring Series Day 7. Start time is at 1:30.

Sunday the 22nd is Day 8 of the Spring Series and the last day for Penguin sailing around here until the Fall Series.

Please consider attending the International Regatta in Annapolis on August 18th and 19th.

See the Notice of Race posted on the class website.  http://www.penguinclass.com

The event is hosted by the Severn Sailing Association.

This is a great place to sail with challenging conditions and good competition. Please add this event to your summer calendar.

Hello Everyone

Saturday the weather did not cooperate so we did not sail Puddle Championship.

On Sunday once again there was too much wind, we sailed anyway.

Seven boats sailed six races. The wind was West at 15 to 20.  The forecast indicated that the wind speed was going to decrease as the afternoon went on. That didn’t happen. On the last run I went faster than I have ever gone in a Penguin. Full out speed. Spray flying, the whole boat was vibrating. It was time to gibe, I thought it would be best to wait for the gust to move on by before I made turn. It is a little early in the year for swimming.

Kastel and crew in usual fashion, reminding us all of why we need to spend more time in the boat. While sailing smart they were testing some experimental equipment and will not be scored for the series.

Jean and Jeanette sailed strong all afternoon and made a great call to toss the last race which gave them that one point ahead to take the win for the day.

These were the only two boats with crew. I think the results show a great example of how the boat works best with two people.

This was a very difficult day for sailing and the competition was close with one point each separating the top three boats.

Thank you to Ed for handling the RC boat and allowing me to sail.

Thanks to everyone that sailed and for staying around to help put all the boats away.

Next week we will sail on Saturday Start time at 1:30

Hello Everyone,

The weather was a little better last weekend. We started the Spring Series on Sunday 4/10/2011

Winds were West at 15 gusting to 18 and very shifty. We all knew there was too much wind coming

but we wanted to sail anyway as we have been waiting to get back in our boats since the fall.

Nine boats showed up and two of them made the smart decision not to sail.

Thank you to Tom and Ross for handling the RC and crash boat duties.

Thank you to everyone that helped with launching and hauling the boats

that is a big help to everyone and is greatly appreciated.

Dan in the Salentine built 9042 the Blind Squirrel wins the Series Opener.

Even the blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. Dan said he was able to keep

the centerboard all the way down on the beat and stayed in clean air. Working the north side

on the downwind legs he was able to stay in the breeze to take the win in all three races.

Congratulations, nice to see the boat still going fast.

We welcome two new skippers to the fleet Tom Elliot and crew sailed the 9628 and

Patrick Kresch sailed the 4557. They both did a super job on what was a very tough day for Penguin sailing.

It was great to have you guys sailing with us. We hope to see you at the pond again soon.

Next weekend we will sail the Greater Midwest Puddle Championship on Saturday with a Start time of 12:30.

On Sunday we will sail Spring Series Day 3 with Start time at 1:30.

We need help with RC for both days next week, if anyone is available please let me know.

See you on the water

Patrick
