For Sale and Want Ads 1965 John Wright Penguin, #7718

This boat is a pristine 1965 John Wright Penguin sailboat in original condition, designed and built in Philadelphia.  The boat is in mint condition and comes with its original sail and trailer (a Cox trailer), which are also in mint condition.  Accompanied with the Penguin are extra sails, a spare trailer tire and other accessories. The Penguin’s provenance is complete and fully documented. Some of the paperwork is beautifully framed. The abundance of original documentation includes the original purchase order for this custom boat.   This exact boat was staged for over three months in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and featured in its special exhibition store supporting the exhibition  American Watercolor, In the Age of Homer and Sargent. The exhibition catalogue written by the Museum curator Kathleen A. Foster inspired the nautical theme of the store and is why the boat was made central to the exhibition experience.   The Penguin was a hit and created much excitement among visitors and across social media channels. All the attention attracted visitors from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, and yachting clubs across the area, as well as the Wright family and former Wright boat builders.   This Penguin is special and a masterpiece. While these boats are not rare, everyone including the Wright family has not seen one at this age in such superior original condition.   For more information please contact James at:  james@jcinc.net          Penguin 4627 : Wright Penguin : Free.  I have owned it since the 1960’s.  The past 40 years it has been stored inside in my barn.  The last  time it was used was about 30 years ago when I raced it for two years at Swartzwood Lake,NJ.  It needs to be completely refinished. I am moving and if I cannot find anyone who wants it I will have to put it in a dumpster. If you or anyone you know wants this Penguin please call me. This boat was built by my father and mother (Thomas and Mary Anderson) in their basement/garage in Richmond, Virginia and sailed predominantly from the Fishing Bay Yacht club, near Deltaville. My mother gave it away after my dad died and I would like to find it and see if the current owner might be willing to sell it to me. I had many happy hours growing up with it and would like to share the experience with my grandchildren.

The build started about 15 years ago and was not complete until four years ago. The Penguin’s hull is made from okoume plywood with juniper chines. It has a double bottom to create the necessary buoyancy in the event it capsized. The deck is made from okoume plywood with a klegecell and fiberglass backing (not visible) for high strength/low weight. The gunwales and mid beam are made from laminated juniper (to get the contour) with mahogany on the “bump” edges for durability. The mast is aluminum extrusion. The boom is laminated juniper. I purchased the centerboard and rudder and they are made with a wood frame, foam center and wrapped in fiberglass. I also purchased the sail from North Sails. It is in great shape. The lines are all in great shape. All hardware is top quality, stainless, etc…  I also have an EZ Loader galvanized trailer and 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard (2015) as well as complete boat covers for the Penguin. Covers are included, but the trailer and/or motor are available for an additional cost. Comes with an old trailer that looks like it was slightly modified to carry this particular boat. Trailer is highway ready with working lights and decent tires. One of the turnbuckles and the oars are contemporary. Some carabiners were used to attach the sheet but other than that, it looks like nearly all of the fittings are original, patina’d brass. There is some minor leaking from somewhere, probably the pivoting centerboard casing. At some point somebody used everyday latex paint on the bottom (blue in the photos) which did not fully seal the boat. Boat is 100% sail-able and towable as is.

Boat is currently garaged in Marquette, MI. Asking price is $1000. Scott frood13@yahoo.com
