The Corsica River Yacht Club in Centreville, Maryland, hosted the 2025 Internationals. Regatta chair John Foster and many CRYC members rolled out the red carpet for the 6 (plus 1) teams that registered and competed. John registered his restored Penguin #666, aka “The Beast”, although the boat stayed ashore while John tended to weather mark duties. The weather mark boat was kept busy setting or changing the mark as PRO Roy Sherman strived to keep the course square in the unstable westerly breeze. Jonathan and Annie Bartlett got off to a strong start, winning the first two races, and then came back from an OCS in race 3, forced the wrong way, which turned out to be the right way to win that race as well. Guessing became somewhat the order of the day for the final two races with the breeze fading, trending south, fading, and otherwise just being unpredictable. Charlie Krafft, sailing with Finn Besack, had a string of seconds, and a lead in race 4, that turned into playing catch up with the fleet as the wind filled in from the opposite side of the course. In the early races, Bill Lawson, sailing with his wife Colette Preis, traded 3rd & 4th place with Bob Tan sailing with his wife Nora Beck Tan. Collin Kirby sailing with Celeste Palumbo had a string of fifths, sailing Chris Conway’s boat, as the Class-owned boat Collin has been working on was not ready in time for the event. Scott Leppert sailing with his son Elliott rounded out the small but competitive fleet, with a pair of 3rd’s despite carrying 100 extra pounds of crew weight. In race 4, the Lawson team took advantage of a southerly shift to take the win, followed by the Bartletts’ who just managed to get ahead of the Lepperts’ on the final run of the twice around windward leeward course.
Saturday evening, the contestants were treated to Eastern shore hospitality with a BBQ dinner with fixin’s.
Sunday dawned bright and clear, but mostly windless. With zephyrs appearing and lots of optimism on the part of the RC, the fleet eventually headed out when the breeze started to fill in, only to find that with unstable direction and velocity it wasn’t going to be possible to set a course so the N over A flags were hoisted and the fleet paddled in. As fate would have it, the breeze returned shortly after the fleet had derigged but the initial flush of wind faded and the committee’s decision was reaffirmed. With leftovers for lunch, the trophies were awarded. A big thanks to CRYC and PRO Roy Sherman and regatta chair John Foster. Also, thanks to Jono Roberts for the novel trophies: laser-etched repurposed and refinished cigar boxes from Jono’s trophy enterprise. Congratulations to Jonathan and Annie on yet another Internationals win.
