Event Details

The revival of the Admiral Byrd Regatta, hosted by the Cambridge Yacht Club, has seen a doubling of the fleet in the past three years. Cambridge Yacht Club rolled out all the stops to make this event a success, including an ice cream truck with hand scooped ice cream for the competitors after racing. This year, the breeze did not disappoint, and we were treated to three breezy races in the shifty southeast breeze that moved right as the day progressed. The delay between races was a bit long as PRO Ed Cassidy had to deal with crash boats serving double duty rescuing junior sailors and moving marks to keep the course square. Patrick Brooks, sailing with his son Bennett, had a hiking strap come loose, resulting in an unexpected swim.

The regatta dates back to the 1940’s when they invited Admiral Byrd to award trophies, naming the event in his honor. Unexpectedly, he accepted the offer, and attended many subsequent regattas. The club itself dates back to 1911 when Alfred duPont founded the club. Penguins have a long history at the club, including championships held there (1970 North Americans; 1992, 2006, and 2018 Internationals).

Overall, it was a very pleasant day of sailing, and hopefully we will get more Penguins on the water next year.
