The 2026 Penguin Internationals was sailed in conjunction with the TAYC Heritage Regatta.
PRO Bill Lane ran the event in somewhat trying conditions Saturday, as we had a torrential downpour and 45 degree windshifts which made setting the course challenging. He did manage to get in 4 races Saturday, but the drenching, cold rain, low visibility, and generally unseasonal weather for late August, made for a rough day. The sun did come out after we finished for the day, but the wind shut down, making the choice to go in all the more welcome. Sunday was bright and clear, although the wind was still a bit fickle. The Heritage Regatta was initially founded as a Log Canoe event, and they take top billing. Unfortunately, they get free rein of the river, so they ended up passing through our race course. The Log Canoes are swift and traverse quickly through our race area. That isn’t the case for the numerous support and spectator power boats that follow the fleet, and are all but oblivious to the Penguins racing.
On the race course, Jonathan and Annie Bartlett turned in an impressive score sheet to repeat as champions. Bill Lawson and Colette Preis got off to a quick start with two bullets, but had to settle for second overall. Bob Tan, sailing with his wife Nora, finally broke through with wins in races three and seven to take third. Charlie and Cairn Krafft took fourth. Spencer McAllister, sailing with his 6 year old son Jack, retired after one race on Saturday, but came back strong on Sunday winning two races. Patrick Brooks had planned to sail with his son Bennett, but opted to stay dry. Probably a smart move given how unpleasant the weather was on Saturday.
Overall, in spite of Saturday’s weather, the event went smoothly and we are especially grateful to TAYC for once again hosting our event.
